William L. Breton. Old Quaker Meeting House, Lower Merion, Montgomery County Pa built during the time of William Penn. Drawing in graphite and gouache ca. mid-1820s to 1850; sheet 6 3/4" x 9". Excellent original condition, with few stains and pin holes from original easel mount.

William Breton, a self-trained artist born ca. 1773-6 in England, moved to Philadelphia in the mid-1820s and soon after began work creating the illustrations for John Watson's Annals of Philadelphia, as well as selling illustrations to Samuel Atkinson’s Philadelphia magazine The Casket and beginning a series of views of the city's churches. In 1829, Breton entered the lithographic trade to execute the illustrations for the "Annals" and continued to work with the printers of the plates, first commercial lithographers in Philadelphia, Kennedy & Lucas, throughout the early 1830s.
