A handsome early western hemisphere map by Matheus Merian (1593-1650), ca. 1638, based on the 1618 map by Jodocus Hondius. This highly detailed map includes many recognizable place names. Merian, an engraver, married into the de Bry publishing family of Frankfurt in 1617, and is best known for his engravings of European city views. Sheet 12 1/8 x 13 5/8 inches.
